Laura Florea

Hi, I'm Laura!

I'm a fourth year Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo who loves designing, building, and automating systems. I love learning how to use new tools and technologies in hopes of creating something that can benefit people and the world around me.

I am open to full time work opportunities starting summer 2024.

EXPERIENCE

Datadog —  Software Engineering Intern

Incoming software engineering intern on the Workflows product.

Datadog —  Software Engineering Intern

Achieved a 95% reduction in the number of etcd cluster management service deployments by designing and implementing a client-server architecture with Go, gRPC, Kubernetes and AWS S3. Eased sporadic network pressure by 98% via developing a daemon to asynchronously and dynamically manage jobs with Go and Vault. Designed a CLI tool to automatically authenticate users and execute remote cluster management operations on a fleet of 300+ etcd clusters, decreasing execution time by 50% and improving UX.

Tailscale —  Software Engineering Intern

Designed and developed an asynchronous webhook delivery system for the Tailscale platform with Go, SQLite, and AWS EC2. The system decreases the time taken for users to identify and take action on network misconfigurations by over 100x, and is capable of sending over 5000 webhook events per second. Read about it here.

Capital One  —  Software Engineering Intern

Architected a real-time data streaming pipeline notifying clients of fraudulent balance transfer requests with AWS Lambda, AWS SQS, and Python. The architecture is highly scalable, using 70% less Lambdas vs. the previous architecture. The pipeline recovers 100% of $165000 in annual losses from fraud.

Tucows  —  DevOps Engineering Intern

Engineered a Go-based Terraform alternative web service reducing the time needed to deploy infrastructure from a few days of discovery to 5 minutes. The web service aims to accelerate developer velocity and reduce cognitive load on teams. Also developed fully automated testing for Terraform cloud infrastructure, creating CI/CD pipelines and establishing an automated configurable test environment for pipelined testing to be executed on. Full automation of the testing process reduced testing time to 50%.

PROJECTS

Jhin Bot — Python

A Discord bot which scrapes op.gg for League of Legends champion statistics and displays them via Discord.py and BeautifulSoup. Find it here

Race Start Clock  —  Python & Raspberry Pi

A programmed circuit in which upon the press of a button, activates a hexadecimal LED which counts down from nine to zero, as well as coloured LEDs that simultaneously turn on and off. See it here

WLP4 Compiler — C++

A compiler for a small subset of C++ which includes only integers and integer pointers.

MIPS Dialect Assembler — C++

An assembler for a dialect of MIPS.

Three Blind Dice — Java

A self-developed dice probability game complete with dice rolling animations, menu, and outcome scoring storage and display. Learn more here.

Pong — Java

A Java version of the classic game of Pong that allows the user to play with the computer as an opponent, or with another human player. View it here.

MORE ABOUT ME

When I'm not busy coding, you can probably find me playing video games. I love playing League of Legends with friends as well as various Super Mario games, BoTW, and Animal Crossing on my Nintendo Switch.

I also love to travel and taking photographs of the gorgeous nature and architecture that I come across.  My favourite places I've visited so far are Hawai'i and Italy. I really hope to visit them again and explore more of the world once it becomes possible again.

A photo I took during my last trip to Hawai'i of the Napali Coast on the island of Kauai.
